School of Social Work faculty lead mental health training for community health workers in Peru

Community health leaders

Jerome Galea, with community health workers in Lima, Peru, following a training on the “Do More, Feel Better” depression intervention.

Jerome Galea, PhD, MSW, LCSW, associate professor of social work and co-investigator of the National Institutes of Health–supported Spanish-language depression intervention project Do More, Feel Better, led a training for community health workers in Lima, Peru, on delivering the intervention to older adult caregivers of children with schizophrenia.

The Do More, Feel Better project — led by principal investigator Amber Gum, PhD, professor in the Department of Mental Health Law and Policy — trains seniors to help other older adults plan activities that can enhance mental health.

Galea was assisted by Carmen Contreras, courtesy assistant professor in the School of Social Work; Maria Salome Velez, MSW, doctoral student and project coordinator in the School of Social Work; and Isabel Rollandi, PhD, project coordinator at Weill Cornell Medicine. This pilot project is the first of its kind in Peru and holds promise for expanding access to depression care in low-resource settings.
